The last few years have seen incredible change in publishing. The move to eBooks and online publishing has "democratized" the industry. More and more writers have been able to get their works to a wider audience.

Andromeda Spaceways Magazine, as a small volunteer "semi-pro" magazine, has moved through this new landscape, having, like many, moved from print to eBook to reign in costs and keep publishing.

2017's Best Stories is our second annual anthology and again is only available in print. It offers what we consider our best offerings from 2017, but also fills that niche for those who still like to get their hands on a nice shiny perfect bound volume that they can place on the bedside table or put in their bookshelves. Tablets will never offer the same assurance or warmth.

The emotions that rise when you scan across books, and just seeing the spine and title, evokes memories of its contents and the enjoyment of reading. Opening the Kindle or iBooks app doesn't quite feel the same.

So it is interesting to watch how the publishing industry continues to evolve with companies like IngramSpark and Kindle Direct Publishing offering more for writers, publishers, and booksellers, making print viable again, especially for small publishers like Andromeda Spaceways.

This issue of Best Stories has a few gems. Edd Vick's "Polaroid Land" was our favorite. They say photos come alive, but when they really do life will never be the same. Don't miss Lyn Battersby's "The Missing Years" and Freya Marske's "Hamelin Graves," both shortlisted for the Aurealis Awards in 2017.

We hope you like 2017's Best Stories and tell all your friends.
