In 1989 Roberta Gregory was asked by Michael Dowers of Starhead Comix to do an "Adult" comic.
Money was a bit of a problem for the alternative Comix field, and thus Roberta agreed. With a full-time job, progress was very slow and piccemeal, but she determined to create the best crotic comic she could possibly imagine: as many sexual situations as could plausibly fit into a storyline; a storyline that was humorous, entertaining, and with something to say about people's fantasies and sexuality. Above all, a story involving perfectly ordinary people because, life itself is "x-rated". (At least for most of us)
In May 1991, It was finally finished. But by then, dozens of hastily-created sex comics had already swamped the market (most likely swamping any chances Michael and Roberta had of turning much of a profit on this book) but there is still nothing at all like "Artistic Licentiousness", beginning with the fact that erotic comics written by women in that time were unheard of.
In the words of Roberta Gregory herself- "Perhaps this raises questions about fundamental differences in female and male sexuality. Maybe once more I'm cursed to be "the first". At any rate, when I overlook all the klutzy panels I'd like to redraw, I am rather proud of this. If response to this book is favorable, I'd love to continue this story in future issues."
